Biography

My research focuses on charting the development of cognitive, social, and emotional functioning from early childhood into early adulthood. I am interested in identifying the factors that contribute to individual differences in self-regulation and developmental trajectories within and across the above domains. By examining the intersecting contributions of context through cultural and socioeconomic conditions and nurture through the family relationships and secure attachment, my research highlights contextual factors that shape developmental trajectories of self-regulation, which in turn influences long-term functioning in adolescence and emerging adulthood.

Research Interests

My current research agenda includes utilizing large secondary datasets to build advanced statistical models to explore associations among intimate partner violence, parental mental health, parenting, self-regulation, and adolescents' well-being. At the same time, my research involves broadening the social-cultural understandings of family and child development by exploring families from diverse ethnic, social, economic, and cultural backgrounds. My current research projects address service outcomes and inform policy by examining the following interrelated questions:

  • How does family violence between parents constitute a home environment that influences children’s development in self-regulation?
  • What are the long-term benefits of self-regulation for adolescent wellbeing?
  • What are the social and relational factors that promote and interfere with mothers’ postpartum mental health and parenting?
  • How can we detect and identify different types of intimate partner violence quickly and accurately by using big data and algorithms?
