Scholarships Available to International Students

Undergraduate International Students

All accepted international students will be considered for a partial international scholarship at Clarkson. All admitted applicants are considered for merit-based International Scholarship. Separate applications are required for awards such as the Ignite Presidential Fellowship, #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship, and Honors Program. These scholarships range up to $40,000. The amount awarded is based on the student's academic record. For first-year students this includes: secondary school GPA, rigor of the curriculum, SAT and english proficiency test scores, and letters of recommendation. For transfer students, university GPA, rigor of curriculum, english proficiency test scores, and letters of recommendation are considered. International scholarships do not increase after the first year. Students must maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress in order to maintain their international scholarship.

Clarkson does NOT offer need-based financial aid to international undergraduate students.

International students may apply for admission to our Honors Program. There is a separate application process for this program. An on-campus interview or telephone interview is also required. Students who are accepted into the Honors Program receive a $2,000 per year scholarship. Admission to this program is very competitive.

Special Awards and Unique Funding Options

The Ignite Presidential Fellowship is a merit-based scholarship covering all tuition costs for 10 first-time students entering Clarkson for four years (eight semesters) of undergraduate study.

To apply for this award, you must:

  • First, you must apply to Clarkson University for Early Decision OR Regular Decision.
  • Second, you must apply for the Ignite Presidential Fellowship by February 15.

Clarkson University now offers an additional $8,000 scholarship to Early Decision admission applicants. The scholarship will be split evenly over four years ($2,000 per year) and is exclusively offered to Early Decision admission applicants.

To qualify for this award, you must:

  • apply for admission to Clarkson via Early Decision no later than December 1
  • be a new incoming freshman applicant
  • submit your Early Decision admission deposit within two weeks of receiving your financial aid notice (in extenuating circumstances the Admission Office may offer a short extension)

Federal, State, and Institutional Aid is awarded on an annual basis. It is based on full time enrollment (12 credits per semester) in both the Fall and Spring semesters. If a student is not enrolled in a semester, the aid will be pro-rated for 1 semester of attendance, i.e. 1/2 of the annual award amount. Students are not eligible to receive the annual total amount in one single semester.

Clarkson offers a $1000 scholarship to any student who has an official undergraduate admissions visit to our Potsdam, New York campus. Visits must be completed no later than December 1st for Early Decision and February 15 for Regular Decision of the senior year of high school. Like most Clarkson scholarships, this award is renewable each year for four years for a total of $4,000. Each student will only receive one $1000 Clarkson Visit Scholarship, regardless of how many official admission visits they complete.

Qualifying official admission visits include:

  • any personalized visit set up directly through the Undergraduate Admission Office
  • pre-arranged overnight admission visits for accepted students
  • Summer Visit Day, Fall Open House, Spring Open House, Accepted Students Day
  • Group visits to campus (high school, college planning/access program, athletics) in which you have a pre-arranged on-campus admission interview or complete an interview following the visit via phone, video or an off-campus interview
  • Official Admission Virtual Visits and Official Admission Virtual Events will count (until further notice)

The Honors Program offers unique academic challenges and experiential learning opportunities to prepare Clarkson University’s most promising students to lead fulfilling lives and to drive positive change in science, technology, and society. Admission to the Honors Program is highly competitive and requires a separate application. Learn more about the Honors Program application process.

Students interested in the Honors Program must complete the Honors Program application in addition to the regular admissions requirements for Clarkson University. The priority deadline for Honors is February 1. Early applications are welcome and will be reviewed as they are completed.

Job Opportunities

Campus Jobs

There are limited part-time positions available for international students on campus. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to secure on-campus employment. While there are some areas on campus that hire international students, our food service provider, ARAMARK, seems to be the best area to seek employment. The average student will work about eight to 10 hours per week. The pay is at the New York state minimum wage. Under the terms of the F-1 student visa, international students may work up to 20 hours per week on campus.

Off-campus Jobs

Students in F-1 status are allowed 12 months of employment authorization after degree completion, with students graduating from STEM degrees authorized for two additional years. To obtain required practical experience, current students may be eligible for internships and co-ops as well. Off-campus employment requires authorization under the regulations of the F-1 student visa. The International Center will assist students with necessary documentation.

Register for Orientation

During orientation you'll get an idea of what to expect during your graduate studies. Sessions are generally held just prior to the start of your first class and you'll receive information about how to register in your email. International students are able to register for international-specific orientations. If you have any questions you can email us at gradschool@clarkson.edu.

Plan Your Course Load

Check in with your graduate coordinator and department office during this time, especially if you have any additional questions. Schedule a meeting with your advisor to plan your course enrollment, as well. You can find detailed instructions on completing course enrollment below:

Arrange Tuition Payments and Check In

Make sure you have paid your tuition and fees in full by the semester or quarter due date. Once you do, you can check in as a student to confirm that you are planning to attend the upcoming term. All students are required to complete the check-in process. You will not have access to Moodle (Clarkson's portal for online course content) until you do. You may also be subject to late fees if this is not completed in a timely manner.

Verify Your Employment Eligibility

If you are holding research or teaching assistantships or expect to work on campus, you must provide certain identification and employment eligibility documents within three days of your official start date. Upon arrival, visit your graduate coordinator's office to begin this process. Please plan to have the following documentation with you:

  • U.S. citizens: Two forms of ID, along with/including your Social Security Card.
  • International students: I-94, visa and passport.

Submit Health Requirements

All students must complete the required student health forms and show proof of health insurance during registration. You can submit all required health forms on your Accepted Student Portal. If you do not have insurance through an outside provider, you will be prompted to purchase Clarkson's student health insurance plan when you check in for classes. More information will also be included with your first invoice.

Arrange Housing

If you need housing to complete your studies at our Potsdam campus we recommend starting the process as soon as possible. Housing in Potsdam close to campus can be limited, and we suggest arriving on campus at least two weeks before classes begin. The information below is only meant as a resource.

A limited number of on-campus housing units (apartment style) are available. The semester rates may be found here. Please contact Residence Life to reserve housing on campus. Campus housing is a great solution for those wanting the closest proximity to campus.

Visit Residence Life

We've put together a list of local communities and other resources. These rental agreements are between the student and rental company or landlord.

Final Tasks

You are expected to have a valid Clarkson University Identification Access/ID card when on any Clarkson University campus. ID cards are effective from your first day of study. Your Clarkson student ID will work at all of our campus locations. To secure an ID, please log into your PeopleSoft account and follow the instructions found in your "To-do" List.

Vehicles on the Potsdam or Schenectady campus must be registered. You can find the form in your CU account. To secure a parking pass/sticker:

  • Potsdam: Your registration sticker can be picked up during orientation along with your student ID.
  • Schenectady: Your registration pass can be picked up at the front desk on the first floor of the Capital Region Campus.

If you did not do this during the admissions process, obtain your username and PIN to complete the password setup process. This will allow you to access PeopleSoft, Campus Email, Moodle (for courses with online components) and on-campus computers. For assistance, email the OIT Helpdesk.

This will be provided in your orientation folder. Read the packet and return the signed front page to your graduate coordinator within one week of arrival.
