Message From the Provost
Greetings from the Clarkson University campus and welcome to the July edition of the Provost's Newsletter. In this issue, we take a look at a new 3+1 Business Administration BS/MBA Accelerated Program that will allow students to earn a BS and an MBA in only four years. We also cover a trip by our physician assistant studies students to care for patients in Nicaragua as well as new research on PFAS mitigation and new techniques of deep tissue imaging. I hope you enjoy reading about our gifted students and faculty as much as I enjoy interacting with them every day!
— Christopher C. Robinson, Provost
New Accelerated BS/MBA

Innovative PFAS Mitigation

Assistant Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering Yang Yang has published research in Nature Water, a sister journal of Nature focusing on water sustainability. Yang's team developed an innovative non-thermal, cost-effective method of near-complete defluorination and mineralization of PFAS in various types of wastewater.

Message From the Director
Welcome to the July edition of the Institute for a Sustainable Environment Newsletter. Clarkson University is committed to sustainability in all it does and in this issue we're pleased to announce that Clarkson has received its third STARS Gold rating in the past eight years!
This recognition reflects both the progress we have made in our campus operations – for example, 100% renewable electricity for the Potsdam campus – and the thorough integration of sustainability throughout the research, education and scholarly work of our students and faculty.
We DO sustainability with work that has local, national and global impact. A few of our great people on campus who are committed to this work are highlighted below. Dr. Erik Backus has long served the green building and sustainable communities industry; the biology/math team of Drs. Kring, White and Green brings interdisciplinary research to life for our undergraduate students and addresses the challenges of local invasive species; and Celia Darling (BS‘24 Political Science, MS‘24 Environmental Policy) received one of Clarkson’s top awards for her contributions to numerous campus sustainability projects and leadership positions during her time on campus.
Please enjoy reading about our accomplishments!
— Susan Powers (BS‘83 Chemical Engineering, MS‘85 Civil & Environmental Engineering), Director of the Institute for a Sustainable Environment / Associate Director of Sustainability / Jean ’79 and Robert ’79 Spence Professorship in Sustainable Environmental Systems

Strategic Planning
Strategic Planning
We encourage you to take some time to share your thoughts on the blueprints for our future. Feedback for each of the plan areas can be provided electronically using the links below:
Blueprint I: Transforming Family Trees
Founded to honor Thomas S. Clarkson's values and deeds, a Clarkson education has a strong history of transforming the lives of students as well as their entire families.
Making a Clarkson education accessible and supporting all our students in a sustainable way is key to our future.
Blueprint II: The Clarkson Experience
To compete Clarkson must develop a distinctive and robust experience in support of our students' development and growth.
Areas of focus include:
- Personalized Learning
- Campus-wide first year experience
- Team experience in every semester
- Student support services
- Cultivating a culture of curiosity
Blueprint III: Excelling in Research
Clarkson will be a university where textbooks are written, not simply read. Supporting excellence in research is key to attracting and retaining the very best.
Blueprint IV: Beyond Traditional Learning
Clarkson will transform how we educate our students while developing new markets
Blueprint V: STEM Thought Leadership
Clarkson's "secret sauce" is creating graduates best prepared for STEM careers. There is global attention to how to do this and how to lead in the companies our graduates thrive in. There is a vacuum in thought leadership in this area.
