A Note About Your Personal Statement

The personal statement should explain your interest in collaborative team science within mathematical biology. It should explain why you would like to be involved in solving problems that arise in the biological sciences using mathematical/ quantitative methods. Note that prior experience in working in mathematical biology is not necessary; we are looking for participants with a clear interest in collaborative research and communication, and so this should be emphasized in the personal statement.

The personal statement should also clearly state whether the applicant would like to focus on experimental biology or the mathematical part of a team science project. For applicants wishing to focus on the experimental side, please discuss any prior laboratory experience with regards to courses taken or other relevant experiences. For applicants interested in focusing on the mathematical side, highlight any relevant experience you might have in mathematics or related research. At the end of your personal statement, please rank the REU team research projects in order of interest (project descriptions can be found here), and briefly explain why you are interested in your top 1-2 ranked projects.
