Biography

My areas of expertise are in business strategy, business analysis and planning, entrepreneurship and international business with a focus on China.

I have been in teaching and administrative positions in graduate business education since 1998. This included the position of Dean of the School of Management for six years at Union Graduate College. I currently teach the MBA Capstone course that entails the development of a comprehensive business plan for regional companies. Over 170 business plans have been developed with many success stories as a result of implementing the plan.  I also teach an MBA China Studies course that incorporates China business research projects and a 12 day visit to companies and universities in Shanghai and Beijing.

For 15 years starting in 1998, I also taught MBA courses in the International MBA Program in the Antai School of Management at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in Shanghai, China. I taught courses in Entrepreneurship and International Business. In addition for three years I was the Co-Leader in Union Graduate College’s Nonprofit Leadership Development Institute.  

Prior to my academic career, I was with the General Electric Co.  During my last 15 years at GE, I was responsible for business and market development in a high technology business both in Europe and Asia. This included establishing in-country offices and staffing with local nationals, developing major business accounts and creating three joint ventures in China. I lived and worked in Shanghai, China, Frankfurt, Germany and Yokohama, Japan.

Early in my career I was the co-founder of a high tech company in the industrial electronics field.

I currently serve on the board of several for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. I am a founding member and investor in Eastern New York Angels Fund that invests in early stage companies.

  • President, Shanghai Automation Co., Shanghai, China 
    Responsible for the start-up of a GE joint venture company with Shanghai Electric. Established the JV operation, hired and trained Chinese professionals. Established the market for the JV. 1996 to 1998
  • Business Development Leader for Asia-Pacific, GEFanuc Co., Charlottesville, VA. 
    Responsible for development of the automation business for all of Asia- Pacific region. Expanded to over 30 offices, distributors and including three joint venture companies in  Shenzhen, Beijing and Shanghai China. 1993 to 1995
  • Manager Business Development, GEFanuc Co., Yokohama, Japan 
    Responsible for the development of automotive automation projects in Japan for Nissan and Toyota in Japan and the US. 1991 to 1992
  • Manager, Automation Programs, GEFanuc Co., Charlottesville, VA 
    Responsible for the planning and development of major industrial automation programs in the automotive industry in US and Japan. Managed strategic and tactical plans to penetrate major account such as GM, Ford, Chrysler, Saturn and Nissan. 1987 to 1990
  • Manager, Manufacturing Systems – Europe, GE Co., Frankfurt, Germany 
    Responsible for the planning and development of industrial automation applications in over 25 major European corporations through the integration of GE’s automation products and services. Expanded GE Automation Europe base products business by $5.0M 1985 - 1986
  • Manager, Consulting Services, GE Co., Schenectady, NY 
    As part of GE Corporate Manufacturing Consulting Services I was responsible for the software development, marketing and operation of a computer-based pooled services supporting manufacturing in over 50 GE components with numerical control applications in Group Technology, sculptured surface and CAD interfaces. This also included the application of robotics to machining systems.  1980 - 1984
  • Management Consultant, Schenectady, NY
    For Sweet Associates I had consulting responsibility to key clients on multimillion dollar projects whose scope included funding, planning, design and construction. For Rescom Inc. I developed new industrial markets for building control and monitoring systems. 1975 - 1979
  • Co-Founder and COO, Randtech Corporation, Amsterdam, NY 
    As cofounder, instrumental in taking company from inception to a full line of computer based monitoring and control and communication systems for environmental control, security and general communications. Exit was the sale of a product line.  1972 - 1974.  
  • Operations Manager, General Electric Company, Various U.S. locations and in Germany 
    Over this thirteen year period with the General Electric Co., I held Management and Engineering positions of increasing responsibility in Systems Engineering, Operations and Field Engineering of computer-based systems. As Operations Manager in Bethage, NY, I was responsible for the operation of three large scale test systems supporting NASA’s Apollo spacecraft. As a field engineering supervisor, at various locations, including a two year assignment in Germany, I was responsible for training and technical support to the U.S. Air Force on GE’s in-flight systems. 1959 - 1971
  • Production Engineer, Moog Servo Controls Company, East Aurora, NY Responsible for design of electronic test equipment needed to support new products into production. Successfully transferred several products from development to production. 1957 - 1958

The responsibility for coordinating and ensuring compliance to maintain the AACSB accreditation.
