Jane Oppenlander Named Professor Emerita at Clarkson University
Clarkson University Associate Professor Jane Oppenlander has been named professor emerita in recognition of 40 years of contributions to the Lewis School of Health & Life Sciences and the David D. Reh School of Business. She was formally recognized at a May 8 ceremony.
A longtime faculty member at Clarkson’s Capital Region Campus and its predecessor institutions, she joined the University full-time following a 35-year career as a scientist at Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory.
Oppenlander has taught statistics, bioethics, epidemiology, and research methods, and has redesigned courses for online delivery. She served five years as chair of Clarkson’s Bioethics program, leading efforts to revitalize it by solidifying the master’s program policy track — one of the few of its kind nationwide — and establishing an undergraduate minor. She also helped expand the program’s reach through a seminar series highlighting faculty expertise and celebrating key milestones.
She has made significant contributions to statistics education and applied research, including co-authoring a business statistics textbook and healthcare data analysis casebooks used at multiple institutions. Her scholarship includes 21 peer-reviewed publications and three U.S. patents, with research spanning quality improvement in health care, nursing research, educational assessment, and engineering. Her current work focuses on statistics education, adult learning, and applications of statistics in health care.
She has also contributed to institutional governance and program development through service on University and school committees, and to the broader community through volunteer work with nonprofit organizations, leaving a lasting impact on students, colleagues, and the academic community.
Oppenlander earned a Ph.D. from Union College and holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees in statistics, education, and mathematics from the University of Vermont.
