Clarkson’s Bethany Almeida Selected for Inaugural Bioconjugate Chemistry Early Career Board

Clarkson University Assistant Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Bethany Almeida has been selected to serve on the inaugural Early Career Board of Bioconjugate Chemistry, a peer-reviewed journal published by the American Chemical Society.

Almeida is one of 10 early-career researchers from institutions around the world selected for the new board. Members represent a range of disciplines contributing to advances in bioconjugate chemistry, a field that brings together chemistry and biology to develop new approaches with applications in medicine, biotechnology and other areas.

The Early Career Board will work alongside Bioconjugate Chemistry Editor-in-Chief Theresa Reineke and the journal’s editorial board. Members will help foster engagement within the scientific community while bringing the perspectives of emerging researchers to the journal.

Almeida’s research at Clarkson focuses on designing and fabricating advanced functional biomaterials to control stem cell behavior. Her work combines concepts from organic chemistry, materials science and stem cell biology to investigate fundamental scientific questions and develop biomaterial-based approaches with potential clinical applications.

As part of the American Chemical Society’s announcement of the board, Almeida highlighted bioorthogonal click chemistry as an emerging area she is particularly excited about. The approach allows researchers to selectively connect chemical components to biomolecules under conditions compatible with biological systems. Almeida noted its potential applications in areas including targeted therapeutics, biomolecular imaging, drug delivery and tissue engineering.

Almeida earned her Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from Brown University and a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering and professional writing from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Before joining Clarkson, she was an American Society for Engineering Education postdoctoral fellow at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory’s Center for Bio/Molecular Science and Engineering.
