Clarkson University's Lewis School of Health Sciences Announces New Paramedic Program, Offers Open House Aug. 8
Clarkson University's Lewis School of Health Sciences has announced its new nine-month paramedic program, set to commence this November. This initiative is the result of a collaborative effort with Clarkson University’s School of Health Sciences and St. Lawrence Health. This new program aims to tackle the significant Emergency Medical Services (EMS) staffing shortages in the North Country and its surrounding rural areas.
An open house will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Clarkson Hall. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the program staff and tour the facility. Applications for the program will also be on hand.
As a New York State Course Sponsor and a provider of several EMT programs annually, Clarkson's EMS education program continues to evolve by developing a comprehensive feeder program that anticipates accommodating 20 students per cohort in the new paramedic program.
"Clarkson is committed to addressing the pressing healthcare needs of our local communities," said Douglas Wildermuth, Director of EMS & Experiential Learning at Clarkson University. "The launch of this paramedic program is a big step in training and equipping healthcare professionals with the capability of delivering high-quality emergency medical services."
To address financial constraints faced by some EMS providers in rural areas, Clarkson’s new paramedic program will offer a range of scholarships to qualifying applicants. These scholarships can assist with the financial obstacles that may hinder individuals who are passionate about this field from pursuing their dreams. With these resources, students can focus on their studies and the practical application of their skills in the community.
"We aim to provide equal opportunities for aspiring paramedics, regardless of their financial background,” said Wildermuth in stressing the importance of this program's accessibility. “By assisting with the financial burden, we enable talented individuals to receive a comprehensive education that will serve as a bridge toward a rewarding career in the healthcare industry."
The new paramedic program will be a full-time educational opportunity; ensuring students can immerse themselves in their studies and gain hands-on experience in simulated emergency scenarios. In the future, participants can also earn college credits, making this program an attractive option for those seeking to further their academic pursuits.
Wildermuth has hired two highly qualified staff to join his team of paramedic instructors. Nationally Registered Paramedic Steven "Kelly" Grayson has been hired to fulfill the lead paramedic instructor position and New York State Paramedic James McGrath has been hired as the assistant instructor/clinical coordinator.
The new staff will work to add new curriculum and equipment to the existing EMS program to establish the first-ever paramedic program in the North Country under the direction of a four-year university. Wildermuth said other degree opportunities within EMS are also being explored.
