Clarkson University occupational therapy students to host CarFit program for older drivers
Clarkson University occupational therapy students will host a CarFit event designed to promote safe driving and mobility among older drivers in the community.
The event will take place Wednesday, April 22, offering area drivers a free opportunity to check how well their vehicles fit them. CarFit is an educational program developed through a partnership among AAA, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association that helps older adults improve safety and comfort in their vehicles.
During the event, Clarkson OT students, alongside occupational therapists from St. Lawrence Health, will conduct individualized checkups with drivers using a 12-point checklist to assess key areas such as seat position, mirror placement and steering wheel distance. These adjustments can enhance driver safety, comfort and overall vehicle fit.
CarFit events are designed to address the changing needs of aging drivers. As individuals age, physical changes can affect driving ability, and proper positioning within a vehicle can help reduce risk and improve mobility.
Appointments will be scheduled in 30-minute time slots beginning at 8 a.m. at the Congdon Hall parking lot across from Clarkson Hall, 59 Main St., Potsdam. Advance registration is required.
