The Finance: Estimating & Planning microcredential is earned by completing a short (approximately 10-hour), non-credit, self-paced, online course. Earning this microcredential requires demonstrated knowledge of the different types of costs organizations experience to include their traits and behaviors, an ability to estimate these costs using applicable cost estimation techniques, and an understanding of how this relates to an organization's profitability. The earner’s knowledge is verified via expert-designed assessments.

Earners’ knowledge of the following has been assessed and verified:

  • Evaluate the applicability of different cost estimation techniques to varying types of costs.
  • Describe the primary types of costs an organization incurs and examine their behavior. 
  • Demonstrate an ability to appropriately estimate different costs.
  • Formulate answers to situations effecting an organization's profitability.

The Finance: Estimating and Planning micro-credential is composed of the following 7 learning modules: 

  • Module 1 – Cost Estimating, 
  • Module 2 – Recurring and Non-Recurring Costs, 
  • Module 3 – Product Costs: Material and Labor, 
  • Module 4 – Product Costs: Overhead, 
  • Module 5 – Selling, General, & Administrative Costs, 
  • Module 6 – Profit or Fee, 
  • Module 7 – Break-Even Analysis. Within each module is a lesson, instructional resources, e.g., PDF articles, webpages, or videos, and an assessment.

An earner’s knowledge is assessed and verified via the following:

  • Completion of a break-even analysis using a spreadsheet program, e.g., Microsoft Excel. 
  • Several exams (multiple choice) designed to assess/verify understanding of foundational terminology and concepts. 
  • Several self-assessment quizzes (True/False) designed to help learners evaluate their own levels of understanding. 
     

Students must:

  • Work through the microcredential course curriculum.
  • Pass each exam with a score of 80% or higher (multiple attempts are allowed).
  • Submit a completed “Break-Even Analysis” spreadsheet file (.xlsx) with a score of 100%.

Meet Your Instructor

Dr. Yelle possesses a unique combination of professional and academic experience, and thoroughly enjoys sharing this quality with participants in career development programs.

Professionally, Dr. Yelle has been in upper management for over 35 years, leading organizations in the fields of operations, finance, accounting, general administrative functions, lean manufacturing, acquisitions and joint ventures, and strategic planning and execution. He has worked for an international chemical company, a renowned cutlery manufacturer, a major jet engine manufacturer, and currently holds a senior leadership position for a consortium of manufacturing companies operating by a not-for-profit organization.

Academically, he has taught undergraduate and graduate college classes for several institutions for over 15 years, covering accounting, finance, operations management, labor relations, and organizational theory-related topics. Dr. Yelle holds six degrees, including an MBA, Masters in Accounting, and a Doctorate in Management & Organizational Theory.
