Construction site and logistics planning refers to the sequence of organizational steps in planning and executing the initial stages of a construction project to maximize efficiency and safety. This micro-course is an overview of the many considerations that are a significant part of site planning for construction projects. Participants will develop a better understanding of the required planning that will result in a more successful project for both owners and contractors. It will enable them to become better partners, whether in a management, professional, technical, or labor role as their respective careers progress.

This microcredential takes you through a systematic approach to construction planning, beginning with fundamental concepts and progressing through specialized areas that directly impact project success. You'll learn to balance competing priorities, manage constraints, and develop comprehensive plans that protect people, preserve the environment, and optimize the use of materials and equipment. Through practical exercises and case studies, you'll practice developing effective site plans while understanding how client-contractor relationships fundamentally shape planning decisions and project outcomes.

  • Review the expanding role of planning & logistics in construction, including factors that influence these activities.
  • Identify needed information and potential challenges associated with developing a successful site plan.
  • Practice developing an effective construction site plan based on case studies.
  • Explain how the relationship between client and contractor team members impacts construction and project site planning
     

The Construction Site and Logistics Planning microcredential is composed of the following 4 learning modules: 

Module 1: Fundamentals of Construction Site Logistics and Planning
Module 2: People and Environment
Module 3: Materials and Equipment
Module 4: Case Study

Within each module is an interactive lesson with lecture videos, instructional resources, and a quiz.
 

This microcredential is assessed by four auto-graded quizzes with multiple-choice, true/false, and missing word question types. Earners must receive at least an 80% score on each quiz, and can do so using unlimited attempts.

Earners will have received at least 85% or higher on four quizzes, which tests on the role of planning and logistics in construction, site plans, and site team members.

Meet Your Instructor - James J. Billings, P.E.

With almost 40 years in design and construction, as well as the past 8 years developing and teaching senior and graduate courses at Clarkson University, Jim provides a unique and diverse perspective of the engineering industry.  

His professional experience in the private sector includes strategic planning, program management, design, and construction of major infrastructure projects throughout the U.S.  Jim’s held corporate leadership, management, and technical positions, as well as served in advisory roles to municipal, planning, and zoning boards.

He has also served on executive boards of several professional societies and technical associations.  He’s been active in many community activities in support of local and regional causes.

Jim is a 1978 Clarkson grad in Civil & Environmental Engineering, and a Professional Engineer in 8 states.
