Professor Daved Barry knows what it takes to make it in the business world. An avid scholar focused on innovation, design and creativity, he has brought his expertise to business schools around the globe since 1982—and, this time, it’s Clarkson’s turn. Professor Barry, who joined Clarkson University’s Communication, Media & Design department in 2017, is excited to harness the energy within the Clarkson student body and faculty, describing both groups as people who “want to make things happen.”
At Clarkson, Professor Barry will concentrate on applying fine arts, design and humanities practices to business domains and the general field of innovation, which merges well with the student body focus: creating, building and applying classroom principals to real-world problems and projects.
“Art challenges old understandings and highlights problems,” says Professor Barry. “Design allows us to creatively solve problems through combinations of art, science, technology and craft.”
To do this, Professor Barry will implement studio-based learning in his classes, which emphasize learning by doing, learning through mistakes and learning through problem-solving. These classes include COMM 447 Design-Driven Innovation, COMM 450 Leading Innovation, COMM 449 Narrating Innovation and COMM 448 Portraying Innovation Through the Lens, which will be offered in Spring 2020. Other courses that teach leadership and innovation are also in development.
“The courses are aimed at a variety of majors,” says Professor Barry. “Innovation requires bringing multiple disciplines and viewpoints together. This shows how Clarkson’s Communication, Media & Design department can have a large impact on the campus, the community and, really, the world at large.”
