Clarkson University has agreed to a partnership with the Montessori School of Beijing (MSB) to begin offering two full tuition scholarships per year to individuals interested in teaching at MSB upon graduation.
The teaching fellowships, awarded to two Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) candidates annually, are full tuition scholarships for teaching candidates who will complete their degrees in one or two years. Upon graduation, those who receive the fellowship will then commit to teaching at the Montessori School of Beijing for two years.
“Our partnership with the International Montessori School of Beijing has opened a new chapter with the Si Wai Fellowship program,” said Chair of Education Catherine Snyder. “As the school grows, it will need future-ready teachers who are well prepared to teach to students in the international school's demanding setting. Master of Arts in Teaching candidates who receive the fellowship will bring a new perspective as they view their learning through the IMSB lens. Like our other fellowship programs, this perspective will add depth and texture to the conversations our teacher candidates have every day.”
The Montessori School of Beijing will be following New York State curriculum standards in order to prepare students for study at universities around the world. Current Master of Arts in Teaching students at Clarkson have already interviewed for positions in the school and for the fellowship.
While at MSB, these teachers will receive a salary comparable to what they would receive at a teaching job in New York State, and will also be offered a generous housing allowance as well as free healthcare. Fellows in this program are not required to know how to speak Chinese.
“Throughout my teaching career, both before and after finishing my MAT at Clarkson, I’ve taught at many different kinds of schools,” said Cynthia Cramsie, a Clarkson MAT graduate currently teaching at MSB. “MSB is the first international school I’ve worked at, and it has given me a unique and rewarding teaching experience. The students are all eager to learn and clearly love being at MSB. The office staff are very knowledgeable and supportive with expat issues like visas, apartment hunting, insurance, and other aspects of living abroad. But most of all, I’ve enjoyed being a part of the teaching team at MSB. I enjoy the collaborative spirit of the teachers here, the desire to integrate Montessori principles into all aspects of the curriculum, and willingness to pitch in to help each other when needed.”
The International Montessori School of Beijing has for 30 years been committed to providing the best educational and developmental experience for children from early childhood through middle school with plans to open a high school in the near future. Its English Only and Dual Language programs are unsurpassed in Beijing, providing its students with a strong academic foundation in all subjects, as well as the necessary skills for success.
