Clarkson University student Devika Channaveerappa, a master of science and Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Chemistry, has received a travel award from the American Society of Mass Spectrometry to attend its fall workshop in Boston in November.
Devika’s research interests include using the bottom-up proteomics approach to identify the molecular changes occurring in the atria of rats' hearts during obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). She compares the differentially expressed proteins in control rat atria and OSA-induced rat atria. This could help in understanding the complex pattern of changes occurring with OSA, which leads to cardiac disease.
The workshop will focus on top-down mass spectrometry-based proteomics approach. Other topics to be covered include sample preparation, intact protein separation, and bioinformatics and data analysis tools related to mass spectrometry.
Clarkson University educates the leaders of the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as an owner, CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. With its main campus located in Potsdam, N.Y., and additional graduate program and research facilities in the New York Capital Region, Beacon, New York and New York City, Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university with signature areas of academic excellence and research directed toward the world's pressing issues. Through more than 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, education, sciences and the health professions, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations, and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and innovation with enterprise.
