Clarkson University is pleased to announce two new online programs of study.
With the growing need for teachers in New York State who are certified to teach English to speakers of other languages, Clarkson University’s Department of Education has added a new online Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages program as well as an online Certificate of Advanced Study in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (Supplementary (CAS TESOL)).
Teaching positions in this area are going unfilled because schools cannot find enough certified teachers to hire. A CAS TESOL or a MAT will give teachers an edge in the job market.
The Master of Arts in TESOL combines the flexibility of online coursework with the valuable experience of a full-year residency. This format allows students to reside anywhere in New York as they work toward their career goals.
Interim Director Karen Gregory, Ph.D., who is a MAT class of 2000, is excited for students to start in the programs, “With a combined focus on language learning theory, practical teaching methods, and advocacy for English learners, the Clarkson University CRC TESOL-MAT program will prepare teachers for the deeply satisfying work of teaching English as a second or new language to students from around the globe,” Gregory said.
“Teaching English as a new language is such a satisfying and rewarding career because it truly provides the opportunity to change students’ lives. We teach English but we also work with other teachers to make math, science, and social studies accessible to English language learners. In addition to our work in the classroom, we advocate for our ELLs and support their transition to America. I’m so thrilled to be able to share my enthusiasm for this work with teachers just entering the TESOL field at Clarkson CRC.” Gregory said.
The Clarkson University online MAT ESOL will offer candidates a full 39 credit master’s degree in the discipline. This degree was created for aspiring teachers who want to work with second language student populations. A candidate who successfully completes this degree will be endorsed by Clarkson to be a candidate for professional pre-kindergarten to 12th-grade certification in ESOL.
For the CAS in TESOL program, an ideal student is an already employed K-12 New York State teacher who is seeking additional certification. They will need 12 credits in a foreign language in addition to the required application.
