An online course in the Masters of Science in Engineering Management (MSEM) program at Clarkson University Graduate School recently earned the official designation of meeting Quality Matters Review Standards for online course design. The Strategic Project Management (OM680) course is designed and taught by adjunct faculty Michael Bissonette. Clarkson’s graduate instructional designer Erin Blauvelt also helped design and develop the course. It now holds the QM Certification Mark and is listed in the Quality Matters’ Registry of Courses.
This achievement comes just months after Clarkson’s Graduate School adopted Quality Matters for online course design in early 2017 when it joined QM as a full-institutional member. The Graduate School, along with the Office of Information Technology and through the Teaching & Learning Corner, launched the initiative to introduce QM to faculty through face to face and online workshops. “The response to QM from faculty has been enthusiastic,” shares Laura Perry, Manager of Academic Technology. “Mike was among 30 faculty who completed the QM training early this spring, and work began soon after to review and improve course design on his and several other courses.” Special recognition is due as OM680 is the first to achieve QM designation at Clarkson.
In order to meet Quality Matters review expectations using the Fifth Edition of the QM Rubric, a course must meet each of the 21 essential standards (standards valued at 3 points). In addition, the course must receive a minimum of 84 (out of 99) points. Courses are reviewed by a trained Quality Matters Peer Review Team.
“We are extremely proud of this milestone as it provides a model for others as we aim to increase student engagement, learning and overall satisfaction across the Graduate School,” Kerop Janoyan, Dean of the Graduate School said about the vision for QM at Clarkson. “We know of the positive relationship between quality teaching and student success. QM offers a powerful guide and set of tools for faculty to use when teaching online. The end result is a more satisfying learning experience for our students.”
Quality Matters is a nonprofit, international organization that is recognized as a leader in quality assurance for online education. QM's mission is to promote and improve the quality of online education and student learning through the use of a quality assurance system and professional development.
