Clark Nicklas ’71, one of the founding donors of the Clarkson Ignite Research Fellowship program, passed away unexpectedly last month in his home. Nicklas,
69, was one of three Ignite Research Fellowships donors who enabled Clarkson University to launch and support the inaugural year of awardees in 2018.
He studied mechanical engineering at Clarkson University and later earned an MBA. After college, he worked for National Steel in the raw materials group until founding Vista Resources in 1987, which is an Upper St. Clair-based oil and natural gas company. Under his leadership, Vista drilled over 1,200 wells in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Indiana, Colorado, Nebraska and Wyoming. Subsequently, he co-founded Laurel Mountain Energy with his son Dave in 2014. Nicklas was an inaugural supporter of the Ignite Research Fellows Program in 2018.
