Message From the Dean

This May, as we sent another cohort of graduates out into the world, I was overwhelmed with admiration for their determination and ingenuity. This past academic year was like no other, yet our engineering students, faculty and staff were undeterred by the challenges of living in a pandemic world. As evidenced by the projects and awards highlighted in this issue, they never stopped exploring, creating and innovating. I hope you enjoy reading just a few of their stories.

Software Research Boosted

At Clarkson, we pride ourselves on ensuring that our students have ample opportunities to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty working on projects that will prepare them to face real-world challenges head-on. Soon, undergrads will have enhanced software engineering course projects, thanks to an NSF research grant.

SPEED Team Prevails

Speaking of dirty hands, Clarkson’s Baja SAE SPEED team happily dirtied a lot more than their hands on the road to victory at a recent regional competition in Louisville, Kentucky. The rough terrain and mud were no match for the team, which came in third overall — their best finish in over a decade.

Driving the Future

A Golden Knight was behind the wheel of this year’s International Conference on Connected and Autonomous Driving. Electrical & Computer Engineering Professor Chen Liu was program co-chair of MetroCAD 2021, where autonomous driving researchers and practitioners gathered virtually to discuss the latest challenges in the field.

Undergrads Germany Bound

As travel picks back up this summer, two Clarkson undergrads will be heading to Germany. Recipients of Research Internships in Science and Engineering from the German Academic Exchange Service, Tony Koppers ’22 and Michael Sehn ’23 will perform cutting-edge research at two of Germany’s top universities.
