Communication, Media and Design Department

The Department of Communication, Media & Design focuses on providing undergraduate students with the in-demand communication skills that make them valuable in a variety of fields and workplaces, from Fortune 500 companies and digital production studios to video game manufacturers and startups.

Whether earning a BS in Digital Arts and Sciences or a BS in Communication, Media and Design, our graduates are well-positioned for the ever-evolving digital economy, entering the workforce with a versatile set of leadership skills in digital art, graphic design, digital video and audio, photography, public relations, social media analysis and digital leadership.

As part of our department, students benefit not only from small class sizes, one-on-one faculty mentorship and access to state-of-the-art technology and equipment, but also from being a part of the technological and innovation-rich environment that Clarkson provides overall. Our students work on interdisciplinary projects with students from other disciplines, such as engineering, science and business, through University-sponsored competitions like the Clarkson Ignite President’s Challenge.

Our faculty do more than just teach. They are also active members of communication, media and design industries; they are filmmakers, writers, artists, innovators, web developers and designers. Their work is exhibited nationally and internationally, earning them many awards.

In the Communication, Media & Design department, we make sure our students are learning by doing. Students get this through our unique coursework and classes, but also through extracurricular activities like our TV Station, campus newspaper, and radio station. Our goal is to produce graduates who are ready to collaborate, create and make an impact in whatever careers and projects they take on in the future.

Hands-on Learning

Communication, Media & Design students often elect to take part in Clarkson's radio station, WTSC 91.1FM The Source. WTSC offers all types of shows ranging through many genres: sports talk to hip-hop to classic rock to indie. WTSC is run by a dedicated group of students which make up their executive board. DJs are encouraged to participate in remote events, studio maintenance, and can utilize their professional-quality recording studio.
