Getting hands-on experience is what we are all about in the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering. Whether it’s a flexible, problem-based learning curriculum or collaborative research contracts that allow you to work with world-class researchers, we have something for you.
Our department is one of the largest at Clarkson. We have several mechanical and aerospace research facilities and labs, including our small wind Blade Test Facility (one of only three in the nation), a flight simulator and a wind tunnel (where the U.S. luge team tested their sled aerodynamics before the last Winter Olympics). We promote hands-on learning and research through exciting student and faculty startups, which get off the ground with help from the Shipley Center for Innovation.
Many of our mechanical and aerospace engineering faculty are affiliated with research centers such as the Clarkson Center for Complex Systems Science, the Institute for a Sustainable Environment, the Center for Rehabilitation Engineering, Science & Technology and the Center for Sustainable Energy Systems.
Undergraduate mechanical and aerospace engineering students also benefit from extracurricular hands-on opportunities, such as being on one of our 12 award-winning SPEED (Student Projects for Engineering Experience & Design) teams: Design, Build, Fly; Formula SAE; Baja SAE; FIRST Robotics, SAE Clean Snowmobile and more. They can also participate in K-12 outreach organizations, such as the Clarkson chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, which conducts a Micro RC Fly-In for local high school students.
