University Recognition Day

University Recognition Day, sponsored by the members of Phalanx, recognizes scholastic achievement as well as outstanding leadership in extracurricular activities and athletics at Clarkson.  This years University Recognition Day held April 13, 2008 recognized the following representatives of The Clarkson School:

CUSA Outstanding Teaching Award

The Outstanding Teaching Award was established in 1991 by the Student Association to award outstanding teaching and contribution to education at Clarkson University.

A certificate and monetary award are presented to a male and female student in The Clarkson School who exemplify the ideals of academic excellence and outstanding character for which the school stands.

A limited number of Commendable Service Awards are presented annually to freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, graduate students, faculty, staff and administration members who have demonstrated quality in service to their area/organization.  The award recipients are well-rounded individuals who excel in all aspects of college life and are especially dedicated to service their organizations.

The Commendable Leadership Award

This award is presented to juniors, seniors, graduate students, faculty, staff and administration members who have demonstrated outstanding leadership abilities and quality participation in organizations associated with Clarkson and the Potsdam community.  The award recipients exhibit exceptional leadership qualities and the versatility to balance all aspects of college life.  New Phalanx members are selected from the group of Commendable Leadership Award recipients.

David Donegan, House Advisor Fall 06 - Spring 08

Phalanx is Clarkson's highest recognized honorary leadership society.  It consists of a group of selected members of the Clarkson community who have demonstrated leadership skills and active participation in campus activities, along with above average academic abilities, outstanding character, and high morals.  Phalanx was established in 1929, and each spring inducts new members into Phalanx during University Recognition Day.

Electrical and Computer Engineering

The William A. Dart Award

Daniel Puskas '05 also served as House Advisor Fall 07 and Spring 08
Presented annually by the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department in honor of the late Professor William A. Dart to the electrical and computer engineering senior who has demonstrated the highest degree of resourcefulness, imagination and knowledge of fundamental principles in laboratory work.  The recipient will receive a digital voltmeter.

The John B. Russell Memorial Award

Sarah Brown '05

In memory of Dr. John B. Russell, dean of the School of Engineering (1965-1968) and professor of electrical and computer engineering (1965-1972), this award was established in 1975 and is awarded to the student judged to be most capable in applying analytical methods in engineering design.  The recipient will receive a digital voltmeter.

Liberal Arts

Dr. Carl Michel Awards

Eric C. Bescoby '08, Eric B. Dubois '08

In 1955, Clarkson received a bequest of $5,000 in the will of Miss Lena J. Michel of Springfield, Ohio, for the establishment of a fund to be used for the awarding of monetary prizes to outstanding first-year students in liberal arts.  This is not a majors-only award, and prizes can be based on the work by freshmen students in any Liberal Arts course.  The winner's name will be inscribed on the Dr. Carl Michel Award plaque.

Jerome D. Barnum Memorial Award

Alicen Morely '04

This award was established by the family and friends of Jerome D. Barnum, who served as editor and publisher of the Syracuse Post-Standard and as a member of Clarkson's Board of Trustees from 1941 to 1964.  The fund is used to provide a sum of money to the outstanding senior student majoring in humanities, social sciences or communications media who, in achieving high academic standing, has demonstrated proficiency in the art of written communication.  The winner's name will be inscribed on the Jerome D. Barnum Memorial Award plaque.

Turpin Technical Communications Senior Award

Spencer D. Nowak '06

 Established through a gift by Dr. Elizabeth R. Tuprin, a one-time Clarkson faculty member who was instrumental in starting what is now the Department of Communication & Media at Clarkson, the award is given to an outstanding senior in this department.  The recipient is presented with a year's membership in the Society for Technical Communication and a commemorative plaque.  The recipient's name is also engraved on a plaque on permanent display in the Department of Communication & Media.

Given to the mathematics or computer science major who has made outstanding service contributions to the department.

Interdisciplinary Engineering & Management

The Joseph Scaturro Endowed Scholarship Fund

Benjamin Booska '07

This award is presented annually to a sophomore, junior or senior interdisciplinary engineering and management major who has completed at least three semesters in this major.  The recipient has demonstrated a willingness to help others, good citizenship, financial need, and acceptable academic performance.
