Asbestos Management
Asbestos Awareness
Clarkson University Asbestos Management Program
Asbestos can be found in many types of building materials produced prior to 1980. Asbestos can be found in two forms: friable and non friable.
- Non-friable: the material cannot be crumbled, pulverized, or reduced to powder by hand pressure
- Friable: material that when dry, can be easily crumbled or pulverized to powder by hand
The following may contain asbestos:
FRIABLE Materials
• Insulation on Pipework, ductwork, boilers
• Spray coatings on steel, concrete walls and ceilings
• In cement sheeting on walls, roofs, cold water tanks, gutters, pipes, decorative plaster
• Fire rated insulation, including in fire-rated doors
• Automotive brakes
• Fireproof blankets
• Gaskets and filters
NON-FRIABLE Materials
• Floor tiles
• Caulking around windows
• Roofing Shingles
I think there is friable asbestos-containing material. What do I do?
1. Do not touch the suspected material
2. Contact EH&S (x6640) to take a sample
3. Sample will be sent to be analyzed and the results shared with you
4. NO STAFF AT CLARKSON IS AUTHORIZED OR TRAINED TO REMOVE ASBESTOS
• If the sample is positive, an outside company will be called to encapsulate, seal, or remove the material.
What if the area is already disturbed?
• Do not sweep or vacuum any debris that may contain asbestos
– That will aerosolize it and cause a greater exposure
• Contact EH&S at x6640. If the material is known to be asbestos, an outside company will be called to encapsulate, seal, or remove the material. If the material has not be tested, it will be tested first.
