I worked with Dr. Michael Twiss for the summer researching phytoplankton along with a McNair scholar (the McNair program is very similar to the REU program). Our field work included 48 hours of sampling at the same site on the St. Lawrence River using Clarkson's 25 ft research boat the Lavinia. The purpose was to observe changes over time and see if there were any interesting trends. We also did a 180 km transect of the International Section of the St. Lawrence River using the Lavinia. We sampled 19 stations that were spaced evenly along the length of the river. In addition to some other field work involving long-term monitoring I had the opportunity to spend five days aboard the ship the Lake Guardian on Lake Huron, which is one of the Great Lakes. The Lake Guardian is a 180 ft research ship owned by the EPA. While on board I collected data using the same methods as I used all summer. For more information about what I did and the results I found please click on the research paper link below. Click here to go to the Lake Guardian webpage. I really enjoyed that trip because I was able to meet several EPA scientists who were on board working on a separate study.
