PT102: Introduction to Health Care

Prerequisites: Acceptance into the Pre-Physical Therapy Concentration or permission of the Instructor
This course will explore health care professions and the interdisciplinary health care team. Professional issues and behaviors (generic abilities) related to healthcare will also be examined, with an emphasis on ethics and cultural diversity. Classes will gradually introduce the principles and practice of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) — the format used in the other Healthcare courses, as well as the Physical Therapy graduate program. Interpersonal skills and group dynamics will be promoted through active collaborative discussions, projects, and community experiences. The development of computer literacy and a professional portfolio will be facilitated throughout the semester.

PT201: Healthcare Systems

Prerequisite: PT102 Acceptance into the Pre-Physical Therapy Concentration or permission of the Instructor
This course explores healthcare systems, medical terminology, and concepts of disability. Students develop professional skills related to group dynamics, patient interviews medical documentation and professional behaviors. The semester emphasizes a Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach to patient case studies reflecting the seven professional semesters in the DPT program: Basic Science, Exercise Physiology, Orthopedics, Neurological Science, Integrated Systems, Other Systems and Professional Issues. Students also learn about wellness education and professional interpersonal skills through a "hands on" experience planning and implementing a health fair activity. This course builds on PT102 through continuing to develop PBL skills, computer literacy for health care information, effective use of health-related resources, professional behaviors, sensitivity to cultural diversity, and a professional portfolio.

PT300: Independent Study
Credits Hours: 1-3
Offered: Each Semester
Prerequisites: Acceptance into the Pre-Physical Therapy Concentration or permission of the Instructor
An opportunity for Pre-PT students to undertake a research project or clinical observation with approval by a PT faculty member. A portfolio or written report must be handed in at the end of the semester.

PT301: Scientific Basis of Health Care
Credit Hours: 2
Offered: Fall Semester
Prerequisites: PT102, PT201, and acceptance into the Pre-Physical Therapy Concentration or permission of the Instructor
Students will learn about the scientific basis of health care, with an emphasis on physical therapy practice. Students will gain an appreciation for evidence-based practice, including the components of a research report, how to critique research literature, and applications to clinical practice. The course will address different types of clinical data collection used in health care: subjective, objective, qualitative, and quantitative. Students will continue to develop health-related computer literacy skills, including literature search and technology in the clinical setting. Each tutorial group will plan and complete a research project on some aspect of health care, with an emphasis on physical therapy practice. Students will complete the undergraduate component of their professional portfolio.
