Having spent much of my career as a counselor and student affairs administrator, I am interested in the practical and applied sides of psychology, rather than original research. My work as a writer has largely focused on the interpretation of scientific theories and research findings to students through textbooks and other publications. Having long been interested in the field of human sexuality, I continue to update and revise texts that reach national and international audiences. In teaching the psychology of psychoactive drugs, I have attempted to bridge the gap between our contemporary social and psychological understandings of drugs and the longer history of substance use for a range of spiritual and self-exploration purposes. I have recently returned to teaching the Introduction to Psychology course, which I see as an ideal opportunity to demonstrate the relevance of psychological science to everyday life. I am licensed as a Mental Health Counselor in New York State, and continue to see counseling clients, adding to the practical knowledge of human experience that I try to bring to my courses.
