Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP)

The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) is a program is aimed at increasing the quality and quantity of students successfully completing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) baccalaureate degree programs, and increasing the number of students interested in, academically qualified for and matriculated into programs of graduate study. LSAMP supports sustained and comprehensive approaches that facilitate achievement of the long-term goal of increasing the number of students who earn doctorates in STEM fields, particularly those from populations underrepresented in STEM fields. The program goals are accomplished through the formation of alliances. Phase I awards place emphasis on aggregate baccalaureate production. Phase II awards augment the Phase I emphasis with attention to individual student retention and progression to baccalaureate degrees. Phase III awards augment the Phase I and Phase II with attention to aggregate student progression to graduate school entry.

The Consortium is comprised of seven institutions: Syracuse University (the lead institution) and Clarkson University, Cornell University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Monroe and Onondaga Community Colleges.  Each institution develops its own methodologies for operation.  At Clarkson, LSAMP students are afforded faculty supported research, alliance-wide mentoring, coordinated student travel to conferences, and expanded internship opportunities
