What are the software requirements?

The only software your student will need on his/her personal computer is Microsoft office which can be ordered through us at a substantial savings. Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate edition is provided free of charge to all students. All other software needed for class work is available in University-supported computer labs. Laptops purchased through the University come with Microsoft Office Pro Plus 2007 preloaded.

Can my son or daughter purchase a computer through Clarkson?

Yes, through our Laptop Purchase Program we are able to offer laptops at competitive prices. Allow us to narrow the field and ensure you find a laptop best suited for your student's time at Clarkson University. Laptops included in this year’s program will be announced in April.

Can students get their computers serviced on campus?

Our certified technician services warranty items on Lenovo and Dell computers. Call the Help Desk for service rates on out-of-warranty machines and machines made by other manufacturers.

Where are the campus wireless hotspots?

OIT supports wireless in classrooms and group study spaces. Dorm rooms are equipped with a high-speed data port for each student. Students may bring wireless routers.

Can my son or daughter bring a Mac?

Yes, there is a small community of Mac users on campus. However, Clarkson does not support or service Mac hardware or software. The primary applications such as Exchange (Outlook) and PeopleSoft are designed to work with Windows XP and VISTA and are not compatible with a Mac. Please call the helpdesk with questions about a Mac prior to arriving at Clarkson.

Can my son or daughter use Skype?

In an effort to conserve bandwidth, the use of VoIP (Voice/Video-over IP) applications such as Skype is not allowed in the dorms.

What should we know about file copying and sharing?

Clarkson University treats cases of copyright infringement, to include copying, possessing, sharing or distributing copyrighted works without permission, as theft. Copyrighted works include most music, movies and software. Violators are subject to loss of network privileges, fines, and referral to the Dean of Students for disciplinary action.  As part of the First Year Seminar course, we provide training to all freshmen on Cyber Ethics and our Acceptable Use Policy.
