Firewall FAQ
The campus firewall restricts access to the Clarkson University network from the Internet. Its purpose is to protect campus computing resources from abuse or attack.
I need to connect to my office computer from off-campus. Will this be blocked?
The default configuration for the firewall will permit access to all academic network computers using Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) and SSH. While these protocols are both encrypted, you are encouraged to consider using CUVPN to further secure your communications.
I need to have a change made to the firewall. What do I need to do and how long will it take?
If you are a student living in the dorms and have an academic justification for requesting a firewall change, please complete the ResNet Firewall Exception Request Form and have it signed by the faculty member who oversees the project/class that necessitates your change. If you are a faculty member, please use the Academic Network Firewall Exception Request Form. Approved changes will typically require 24-48 hours to implement. However complex requests or those requests that may pose a significant security risk to the campus may require additional time.
