AFS Upgrade
What is the upgrade schedule?
The AFS system will be upgraded beginning Monday, December 14th at 4:00pm. Beginning at this time all AFS data will be inaccessible. It is anticipated that all user home directories will be available beginning Tuesday, December 15th at 8:00am. All other data will be unavailable until mid-day on Tuesday, December 15th. However, this schedule is subject to change. Please watch this space for updates.
What systems are impacted by this upgrade?
Clarkson's AFS cell is accessible through a variety of methods, including polaris (public-access Linux) and people (public-webserver). As part of this upgrade both of those systems will be upgraded from Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3.9 to CentOS 5.3. If you use either of these systems for coursework and are interested in testing the upgraded systems prior to December 15th, please contact the OIT HelpDesk to coordinate access.
Will my username or password change?
Yes. As part of this upgrade the authentication source for Clarkson's AFS cell will be migrated from an internal AFS source (Kerberos 4) to the Active Directory (Kerberos 5) environment. The practical implication of this is that usernames and passwords will be consistent between AFS and Active Directory. Any AFS users with legacy usernames should note that their usernames will be changed to match those found in Active Directory. Any users who will experience a change in username will receive a separate email notification advising of this change.
I access Clarkson's AFS cell directly through the OpenAFS client. Do I need to make any changes?
Yes. The cell name for Clarkson's AFS cell will be changing from "clarkson.edu" to "ad.clarkson.edu." You will also need to add the following lines to your CellServDB file:
>ad.clarkson.edu #Clarkson University, Potsdam, New York USA
128.153.5.139 #afs1.clarkson.edu
