Opportunities for Faculty
University/K-12 educational partnerships are increasingly recognized as an activity critical to increase the pipeline of students to colleges, especially in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. The recognition of this by our University, as well as by many funding agencies and industries, provides opportunities for funding outreach and related scholarly activities. Some examples of activities you can participate in include:
K-12 Project-Based Learning Partnership Program
Leverage funds used for graduate stipends from own research projects with graduate fellowship funds from this program. It is expected that you and your graduate student help to develop new project-based units for middle or high school classes based on the general area of your research. Contact Susan Powers or Peter Turner for further information.
Research Experience for Teachers
The National Science Foundation provides site grants and project supplements for you to work on research with a K-12 teacher. Concurrent work on curriculum development for the teacher’s class is often also expected. The Office of Educational Partnerships can help identify suitable teachers for this activity. Math-Science Partnership Program
It is anticipated that the NY State Title IIB program will be extended in time and scope. One of the primary local goals is to broaden our program into a more integrated mathematics and science partnership. Interested faculty should contact Peter Turner initially.
Meeting “Broader Impact” Needs for Federal Funding
Including K-12 outreach in your research proposals can help to increase the competitiveness of your proposal by meeting the broader impact needs of the funding agency. This is particularly true for federal agencies (NSF, NASA, etc). Staff in the Office of Educational Partnerships can help with
