My journey to chemistry began in 1998 as an undergraduate student at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. Polymer science all of a sudden ran into my life and caught me, which guided me through a master program at the University of Siegen, Germany from 2002 to 2004, and a PhD program at the University of Bayreuth, Germany from 2005 to 2009. I devoted myself thereafter to the field of functional (nano)materials derived from polymers. After a postdoc stay in the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, Germany, I started my independent career there in 2011 and led a team working on poly(ionic liquid)s. In 2017, I moved to Clarkson University, USA to continue my research journey with functional polymers.

Research Interests: Poly(ionic liquid), porous materials, carbon nanomaterials, colloidal nanoparticles, responsive materials
Current Research: Our research interests are in the synthesis and materials applications of functional polymers, bridging the fields of polymer materials and materials chemistry. Currently our focus is on poly(ionic liquid)s, a newly emerging class of charged polymers that are produced from the polymerization of ionic liquids. These polymers are useful building blocks for fabricating porous polymers and their membranes, responsive polymers and soft biomimetic actuators, as well as colloidal systems. They are also applicable in the production of porous heteroatom-doped carbon nanostructures of defined shape to be used in the energy and biomaterials field. The mission of our group is to advance and apply the fundamental knowledge in polymer science to tackle challenges in materials science.
