Molly MacElroy ‘14, MBA
Current Position: Assessor, City of Schenectady

I had a master’s in education and was working as the director of residential life at Union College in Schenectady. Under an arrangement with what was then Union Graduate College—now Clarkson University’s Capital Region Campus—Union employees could take one graduate-level class per semester, tuition free. I decided to test the waters by enrolling in an MBA course.

I chose “Leadership and Organizational Behavior” because I was looking for some business background that I could apply in the job I had at the time. Instead, what I discovered was that I preferred business to higher education.

At first, I continued working and taking classes part time. Eventually, I took a leap of faith and pursued my business education full time. Now, I have an MBA and a job I love as assessor for the City of Schenectady. I owe that job to the connections I made through the Clarkson MBA program.

I took advantage of all the options. I started part time and finished as a full-time student. Although I took one course online, I attended most classes at the Capital Region Campus. I liked that the professors really take an interest in you and draw on their own business experience to make the subject matter fascinating.

By spring 2014, I had a degree with the Clarkson name on it. That opens a lot of doors.

My connection with the City of Schenectady began with my MBA capstone project. I was part of a team of students who were helping the city ramp up its Home Ownership Made Easy in Schenectady (HOMES) program. The city developed the program to help prospective homeowners buy foreclosed properties and return them to the tax rolls.

Our goal was to provide a framework to expand the program—to make it less about selling homes and more about showcasing all that Schenectady has to offer. We worked closely with the mayor and had a lot of access to city officials. In the end, we provided a comprehensive proposal, complete with financial, marketing and operational recommendations and projections. And I was offered the chance to start a very different career—one that’s extremely rewarding.

Every day, I use my Clarkson skills to provide a service. That’s an essential component of any business.

I had such a great experience at Clarkson, and I will always be grateful for the opportunities I have as a result. I highly recommend the program.
