Matthew E. Syroczynski (sir-ZIN-ski), son of Barbara and Tom Syroczynski of Hamburg, N.Y., has been named the 2002-2003 Clarkson University Mike Morrison Memorial Scholar.
Syroczynski, who is a business administration major, will be a sophomore this fall. He is the tenth recipient of the esteemed scholarship, named for the late Clarkson hockey star, Mike Morrison.
Syroczynski was selected for his participation in athletics, his loyalty to teammates, his academic success and his desire to succeed - all attributes Morrison displayed every day.
Morrison was killed in a tragic construction accident several months after his graduation. His parents, Ed and Shirley Morrison, and family and friends established the Mike W. Morrison Scholarship Trust, a private foundation, for the purpose of creating a scholarship fund at Clarkson in their son's name.
After a slow start to his rookie campaign, Syroczynski has developed into a solid Division I player, providing a physical presence in front of the crease and in the corners as the Knights' biggest player at 6-4, 210-pounds. Syroczynski skated in 12 games on the left wing, and recorded his first collegiate point with Clarkson's second goal in the 2-0 win over Mercyhurst (1/4).
Prior to Clarkson, Syroczynski played for the Nichols School in Buffalo, N.Y., where he was team MVP and leading scorer while serving as captain.
