Clarkson University Men’s Rugby Club Wins State Championship

The Clarkson University Men’s Rugby Club has won the State D3 Championship by going undefeated through the regular season. The club won its final regular game of the season Sunday, defeating Paul Smith’s College 27-10.

Winning the title gives Clarkson an automatic bid to the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) Tournament. The single elimination tournament includes teams from New England, the Midwest, and the South.

The first tournament game, against the champions from the Metropolitan New York area, is November 14, at a place and time to be determined. If Clarkson is successful, they will continue on when the tournament finishes in late April, after a break for winter.

"The veteran core of this team has been playing together for three and now four years," says Club President Geoff May. "This in addition to the quality depth of underclassmen makes our team a formidable opponent for any rugby team."

May, a senior civil engineering major from Binghamton, N.Y., also serves as co-field captain. Zach Butcher, a senior electrical engineering major from Charlotte, N.C., is the other field captain. The team is coached by environmental engineering graduate student James Laing of Rochester, N.Y.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in six alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world’s pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and health sciences, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
