Clarkson University Near Top in Washington Monthly National University Rankings

Washington Monthly magazine has ranked Clarkson University #54 in its national university college rankings, up 16 places from the last time the rankings were published in 2007.

The magazine also ranks Clarkson #3 in the nation for Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) service and #39 in faculty receiving significant awards.

Unlike similar guides, Washington Monthly says that their survey "asks not what colleges can do for you, but what colleges are doing for the country."

"Obviously we’re very pleased to rise to #54 in Washington Monthly’s rankings of national universities," said Clarkson President Tony Collins. "But we are also very excited about our #3 ranking for the service of our Army and Air Force ROTC programs and for our #39 ranking in our faculty research awards.

"Within our statement of the eight Clarkson values, we define service as ’offering our time and skills for the good of our fellow citizens leads to the prosperity of the community and to the character development of the individual.’ We are proud to say that both of our ROTC programs most certainly exemplify this ideal of service. At the same time, through our commitment to the Yellow Ribbon Program, it is our honor to also show gratitude to the men and women of the armed forces.

"I also must recognize our hard-working faculty, who through their many prestigious research awards have placed us well ahead of some other very good schools. Their research enables both our undergraduate and graduate students to be educated on the cutting edge of their fields."

The magazine rates schools in three categories: social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and Ph.D.s), and service (encouraging students to give something back to their country).
