Goodarz Ahmadi of Potsdam, a professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Clarkson University, has been awarded the title of "Clarkson Distinguished Professor." Ahmadi is the first recipient so honored.
The title "Clarkson Distinguished Professor," recently established by the University, is applied to tenured professors whose accomplishments well exceed the requirements for promotion to the rank of full professor.
Ahmadi has distinguished himself in every area of University activity. He is internationally known for his numerous engineering and scientific research contributions and has authored two books and about 400 technical publications in archival journals. He also has made more than 500 presentations at national and international technical meetings and has given more that 100 invited talks and short courses at other institutions.
Some of Ahmadi's research interests include multiphase and granular flows, three-phase slurry flows, aerosols, micro-contamination control, turbulence modeling, stability of fluid motions, continuum mechanics, nonlinear random vibrations and earthquake engineering. His research has been supported by DOE, NSF, NASA, Corning, IBM, Xerox, Dura and NYSTAR for over $3 million in the last ten years.
Ahmadi has served the University in numerous capacities, including chairman of the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering. Among the many instructional and advising awards he has received include the University Distinguished Teaching award and the University Outstanding Advisor award.
Ahmadi has been at Clarkson since 1981. He holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Tehran University in Iran, a master's degree in civil engineering from Purdue University, and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Purdue. Prior to his tenure at Clarkson, he was dean of Engineering at Shiraz University in Iran.
