Clarkson University Civil & Environmental Engineering Professor Emeritus Gordon B. Batson was recently honored at the American Concrete Institute (ACI) Fall Convention held in St. Louis, Mo.
A session was held to honor Batson and his many years of dedicated service to ACI Committee 544 on fiber reinforced concrete and to the development of the field of fiber reinforced concrete.
Fiber reinforced concrete is concrete containing fibrous material which increases its structural integrity.
The session included presentations from experts from academia and industry on recent advances in fiber reinforced concrete applications on design, performance, and repair of concrete structures with a variety of fibers.
This honor comes just months after Batson was recognized for his contributions to the concrete community. His paper "Mechanics of Crack Arrest in Concrete," coauthored with J.P. Romualdi, was selected as one of only 13 landmark papers since 1922 in concrete materials research.
The paper was published in the Proceedings of ASCE Journal of Engineering Mechanics Division, V. 89, pp 147-168, in 1963. The 13 papers were republished in ACI Special Publication SP- 249 "Selected Landmark Papers in Concrete Materials Research" in 2008. Batson’s paper was presented by Prof. Surendra Shah of Northwestern University during the ACI Spring Convention this past March.
Earlier this month, Batson presented a seminar at Clarkson on "Fifty Years of R&D of Fiber Reinforced Concrete," where he reviewed how the research idea of fiber reinforced concrete was initiated and how he got involved in the concrete materials community while he was a graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University.
Batson started his academic career at Clarkson as an assistant professor in 1961 and was named professor emeritus in 1997. He continues be active in professional and departmental service and teaches courses in reinforced masonry and timber design.
