Clarkson University Zero Emission Team Takes Third Place in Clean Snowmobile Challenge

The Clarkson Electric Knights Zero Emission Snowmobile Team finished in third place this past weekend at the Clean Snowmobile Challenge in Houghton, Mich.

The Clarkson University team used a lightweight 2008 Polaris 600RR snowmobile stripped down and rebuilt with a 37 kilowatt Solectria three-phase induction motor. The motor was driven by a 7.4 kilowatt hour lithium polymer battery pack assembled, with the team's own custom-engineered battery management system.

The events included longest range, subjective handling, objective handling, acceleration, engine noise, cold start, and an oral presentation of the design.

Cipollina, a senior from Binghamton, N.Y., majoring in mechanical engineering; Josh D. Gale, a junior from Goffstown, N.H., majoring in mechanical engineering; Dan I. Kirkpatrick, a December 2007 graduate from Glens Falls, N.Y., who majored in mechanical engineering; Brian C. Loggi, a sophomore from Hilton, N.Y., majoring in electrical engineering; Rob J. Franklin, a junior from Sherrill, N.Y., majoring in aeronautical engineering; Tim A. Swyka, a junior from Westtown, N.Y., majoring in electrical engineering; Peter J. Kudrewicz, a freshman from Little Falls, N.Y., majoring in aeronautical engineering; Leif R. Amber a freshman from Chelsea, Vt., majoring in electrical engineering; Melissa G. Butkiewicz, a freshman from Binghamton, N.Y., currently studying in the Clarkson School; and Tom L. Masse, a junior from Rutland, Vt., majoring in interdisciplinary engineering & management.

Team Advisers Bob Davis and Prof. Don Rasmussen and the team thank Babcock Power Inc., Polaris Industries, Camoplast Corporation, and Mark Hill and Neil Haney from the SUNY Canton Motorsports Program for their support.
