The Kinney Drugs Foundation has awarded Clarkson University a second $5,000 grant for equipment to benefit the Physical Therapy Department Community Wellness Program.
As part of a course in the entry-level doctor of physical therapy curriculum, physical therapy students work collaboratively to design and implement effective community-based programs that promote wellness and health promotion concepts. Currently, Clarkson students are working on six annual community wellness programs:
- Building Better Bones - exercise-based classes and education sessions designed to battle decreased bone density; offered through the SOAR Program at SUNY Potsdam.
- Functional Movement Screens (FMS) for Clarkson University students - screening assessments, which identify individuals with elevated musculoskeletal risk and individualized corrective exercise plans provided to participants.
- Parkinson's Disease Support Group - a monthly community-based support group where students present educational sessions and assist group activities.
- Caring for the Caregiver Course - a series of educational offerings to area clinicians targeted at preventing and reducing the effects of compassion fatigue.
- Parkinson's Disease Exercise Group - a weekly exercise-based class designed to address the physical needs of individuals with Parkinson’s disease.
- SUNY Dance Injury Prevention Project in collaboration with SUNY Potsdam - a series of educational presentations focused on risk reduction and early identification of dance-related injury for students in SUNY Potsdam’s dance program.
Funding from the Kinney Drugs Foundation was used to purchase portable equipment, such as an ECG monitor, NeuroCom Balance system, EMG system and activity monitors. These monitors can measure health metrics that will be used in the projects to help promote the health and wellness of the community. Equipment purchased with the grant will continue to be used in these programs in subsequent years to benefit students and community members.
