Clarkson University's Babu Receives International Education Leadership Award

Distinguished University Professor S.V. Babu, director of Clarkson University’s Center for Advanced Materials Processing (CAMP), recently received an Education Leadership award from the World Education Congress held in Mumbai, India.

Distinguished University Professor S.V. Babu, director of Clarkson University’s Center for Advanced Materials Processing (CAMP)Babu, who joined the faculty of Clarkson in 1981, was among top educational leaders and dignitaries from around the world to attend the three-day meeting at the end of June. Each year, international representatives of the not-for-profit World Education Congress gather information and recommend award recipients in their respective fields.

“This is quite a surprise and my selection is still something of a mystery but it is still gratifying,” said Babu. “The event was international. Many of the attendees are involved politically and active at various education-focused organizations, including people intent on making universal school and college education a right.”

In 1999, Babu became the director of the New York State-supported Center for Advanced Materials Processing, or CAMP. He also served as the vice provost, research, from 2001 to 2004. He has been a Distinguished University Professor since 2004. In 2008, under his leadership, CAMP was redesignated by New York State as a Center for Advanced Technology for another 10 years.

When announcing his selection for the Education Leadership Award, World Education Congress officials wrote to Babu: “Your leadership and contribution in the field of education is well known. The position that you occupy in the fraternity is strategic and iconic. As a thinker and doer, you are a role model and a believer in change. … The aim of the awards is to recognize the best of best.”

“I must be modest. I was just one of many honored,” said Babu.

A chemical engineer with a Ph.D. in physics, Babu's current research covers interdisciplinary areas spanning materials processing, and especially chemical mechanical planarization, for microelectronic device fabrication.

He has published more than 240 papers in reviewed journals and conference proceedings, is the co-author of 27 patents, and co-edited three books. He has advised or co-advised 38 Ph.D. and 37 master’s degree students, so far, and many of them occupy leadership positions in the semiconductor industry.

Babu has also been the lead organizer of the International Conference on Chemical Mechanical Planarization, held annually in Lake Placid, N.Y., for the past 17 consecutive years.

Clarkson University launches leaders into the global economy. One in five alumni already leads as a CEO, VP or equivalent senior executive of a company. Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Potsdam, N.Y., Clarkson is a nationally recognized research university for undergraduates with select graduate programs in signature areas of academic excellence directed toward the world’s pressing issues. Through 50 rigorous programs of study in engineering, business, arts, sciences and health sciences, the entire learning-living community spans boundaries across disciplines, nations and cultures to build powers of observation, challenge the status quo, and connect discovery and engineering innovation with enterprise.
