Dave Beck, director of the Digital Arts & Sciences program at Clarkson University, will exhibit his latest body of artwork at SUNY Potsdam’s Gibson Gallery in Potsdam, N.Y., from September 16 to October 16. The show, titled Continuation, will include sculpture, video, and 3D animation.
Beck created the work included in this show during an artist residency at the Science Museum of Minnesota’s St. Croix Watershed Research Station this past summer. He worked with various scientists and park rangers to gather imagery, video, and data along the St. Croix River during the month of July. Beck then used the material to create a short digital video and a 20-foot tall projected 3D animation.
The works reference the historical relationship between humans and the river, with a particular focus on the logging industry. "Although I created this work in Minnesota, much of it is influenced by my time in the North Country and, more specifically, my research on the rich history of the Adirondacks," says Beck.
Continuation opens on Thursday, September 16, with a reception for the artist from 5 to 7 p.m. The public is welcome and refreshments will be served. Beck will also give a public lecture about both his art and the process behind creating the work featured in Continuation on Wednesday, September 29, at 5 p.m. in the gallery.
The Gibson Gallery is open six days a week (closed Sundays) and more information can be found on the museum website at http://www.potsdam.edu/academics/AAS/gibson.
