Clarkson University's Golden Knight Battalion Ranger Challenge Team finished ahead of teams from 16 other colleges and universities at the 2006 1st Brigade competition held earlier this month at Fort Devens, Massachusetts.
"The Ranger Challenge team trained very hard and was rewarded with a very strong finish. I am very proud of all the cadets that participated in Ranger Challenge," remarked Lieutenant Colonel John Hinrichs, Golden Knight Battalion Commander. This is the second year in a row the team finished in 4th place at the annual competition. The Golden Knight Battalion won the competition in 2000.
The 12-person team, made up of students from Clarkson and SUNY Potsdam, are all enrolled in the Army ROTC program at Clarkson University. Coached by Captain William Prayner, the team members include: team captain Adam Karboski '07, Business Administration; Mickala Henson '07, Aeronautical Engineering; David Beale '07, Chemical Engineering; Andrew Gaffield '08, Mechanical Engineering; Michael McLaughlin '08, Interdisciplinary Engineering & Management; Danny Cunningham '08, Political Science; Jason Burgess '09, Civil Engineering; Michael Frisone '09, Interdisciplinary Engineering & Management; David Tiedeman '09, Business Administration; Michael Ives '09, Interdisciplinary Engineering & Management; Gunnar Gramlich '09, Political Science; and Dylan Morphet '10, Civil Engineering.
This years' team started training when school began, and featured 21 cadets competing for 12 slots. Because of the strong turnout and number of underclassmen participating, the Battalion expects to improve on their performance next year.
Among the 20 teams competing in this year's Ranger Challenge were cadets from Cornell University, the University of Massachusetts, Northeastern University, Rochester Institute of Technology and Syracuse University. Clarkson was able to finish ahead of such perennial powerhouses as Norwich, Syracuse University, and the University of New Hampshire.
