BBC Documentary Will Feature Clarkson Researcher

In 1982, a group of 26 exceptionally gifted students, including Clarkson researcher Leonid Fedichkin, were accepted to study at the School for Natural Sciences in the former Soviet Union. However, in 1986 Mikhail Gorbachev introduced a program of economic, political and social restructuring that would alter the course of many of the young students lives. Gorbachev's perestroika became the unintended catalyst for dismantling the Soviet Union's totalitarian state and brought about the collapse of the old order.
The documentary is being filmed in Germany, England, Switzerland, Russia and the United States. Based upon the laws of physics, once taught at the school, My Class tells the story of a nation, says Jutta Doberstein, the film's production manager. The University's former pupils represent a generation that was dramatically influenced by the political changes that took place after their graduation.
Fedichkin, among the brightest of those students, and one of the few still involved in scientific research, focuses on nanotechnology and quantum physics at Clarkson. A three-person film crew arrived from Germany on June 26 and spent three days shadowing Fedichkin around Clarkson's campus and chronicling his research within the University's Center for Quantum Device Technology.
Fedichkin received his M.S. with honors and his Ph.D. in the physics of semiconductors and dielectrics from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. He was awarded the prestigious Best Young Scientist award from the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2002 in recognition of his theoretical contributions to the physics of quantum computers and joined Clarkson's faculty the same year.
Nanotechnology and quantum physics are Fedichkin's particular areas of research interest. He has published more than three dozen scholarly articles on these and other subjects. While at Clarkson, Fedichkin has worked on numerous projects sponsored by the U.S. National Security Agency through the U.S. Army Research Office and has recently been engaged in projects for the U.S. National Science Foundation.
