Ibm Senior Vice President & Director Of Research Paul M. Horn To Deliver Shipley Lecture At Clarkson

Paul M. Horn, senior vice president and director of research for IBM, will present the 10th Shipley Distinguished Lectureship at Clarkson University on Tuesday, October 5, at 11 a.m. The lecture will be held in Room 162 of the Cora and Bayard Clarkson Science Center and is open to the public.
He will present “Global Technology Outlook,” IBM’s projection of the future for information technology, which includes forecasts of software, hardware and new uses and capabilities for the information technology industry. According to Horn, these new technologies have the potential to radically transform the performance and characteristics of tomorrow’s information processing systems and provide new business value for customers.
A reception will be held at 10:30 a.m. preceding the lecture.
As senior vice president and director of research for IBM, a position he has held since 1996, Horn is responsible for the company’s worldwide research program with 3,200 technical employees located in five countries, and helps guide IBM’s overall technical strategy.
In his 25 years with IBM, Horn has been a champion for translating technology-based research into marketplace opportunities. Trained as a solid state physicist, he has held key management positions in science, semiconductors and storage, successfully applying these disciplines to solving real-world technology problems. Horn’s top priority as head of the Research Division is to stimulate innovation in key areas of e.business and quickly bring those innovations into the marketplace to sustain and grow IBM’s existing business, and to create the new businesses of IBM’s future.
Prior to his present appointment, Horn was vice president and lab director of the Research Division’s Almaden Research Center in San Jose, Calif., which is responsible for creating novel data centric and pervasive computing solutions for businesses.
Born in New York, Horn received his undergraduate degree from Clarkson in 1968 and a doctoral degree in physics from the University of Rochester in 1973. Prior to joining IBM in 1979, Horn was a professor of physics in the James Franck Institute and the Physics Department at the University of Chicago.
Horn is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and was an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow from 1974-1978. He is a former associate editor of Physical Review Letters and has published over 85 scientific and technical papers.
Horn has received numerous awards including the 1988 Bertram Eugene Warren Award from the American Crystallographic Association, the 2000 Distinguished Leadership Award from the New York Hall of Science, the 2002 Hutchison Medal from the University of Rochester, and the 2002 Pake Prize from the American Physical Society. In 2002, he was named one of America’s top technical leaders by Scientific American Magazine. He is also a member of numerous professional committees including the Clarkson University Board of Trustees (since 1998), the Gallaudet University Advisory Board, and is a trustee of the New York Hall of Science and the Committee for Economic Development.Clarkson University, located in Potsdam, New York, is an independent university with a reputation for developing innovative leaders in technology-based fields.
