Clarkson Sife Team National Finalist For Business Ethics Award
Clarkson University's Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) chapter has been recognized for a business ethics educational video that team members developed and exhibited in public schools last October as part of a SIFE's National Business Ethics Month.
The Clarkson chapter was chosen as one of 15 special competition finalists for a national award in business ethics programs. The team will be honored for their efforts at a regional meeting on April 8 in Hartford, Conn., and will then be one of the finalists competing for the award at SIFE's national meeting May 11-13, in Kansas City, Missouri.
The Clarkson SIFE team wrote and produced a video that presented viewers with various ethical dilemmas that may arise in business situations. Students Jonelle Massop, Allison Mansfield and Rob Reid researched the topic and developed a script. The team then recruited fellow students to play the roles and enlisted the support of School of Business Dean Tim Sugrue and School of Liberal Arts faculty member Christopher Robinson, who both appear in the video.
Ten videotapes were sent out to local elementary schools. After viewing the video, students were given quizzes and the situations were discussed and analyzed.
We tried to dramatize dilemmas that young students could relate to–like misrepresenting yourself or your credentials to taking credit for someone else's work–but were also situations that can, and do, arise in the workplace, explained Massop, one of the project leaders. "We targeted younger children for the simple reasons that we believe it is important to begin discussing and learning about ethics at a young age."
Segments of the video were shot at the University Bookstore in downtown Potsdam and at the student television station WCKN's production studio. The students also received support and technical assistance from WCKN personnel.
Each year, SIFE teams worldwide develop and implement educational outreach projects in their communities that are designed to teach others the principles of the free enterprise system, entrepreneurship, ethics and financial responsibility.
SIFE is the world's preeminent collegiate free enterprise organization. SIFE provides leadership training, regional competitions and career opportunity fairs for thousands of college students throughout 33 countries, and awards more than $400,000 in prize money to college students each year.
