High School Students To Unveil Robot Saturday

This Saturday, February 19, at 1 p.m. in the Louisville Elementary School, the Clarkson University-Massena High School-Salmon River High School team will unveil the “Ice Warrior,” its entry in the FIRST Robotics Competition. The public is invited to attend.

High School students and teachers from Massena High School and Salmon River High School have worked along with Clarkson University students and area professionals to design and build the “Ice Warrior.” The team, known as the Northern STX (Science and Technology Experience), had only six weeks to bring the robot to life.  Saturday’s unveiling will be the only opportunity for the North Country community to see the “Ice Warrior” before it is shipped to Hartford, Conn., for the Northeast Regional FIRST Robotics competition March 30-April 1.

The goal of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is to “inspire curiosity and create interest in science and mathematics among today’s youth by immersing them in the world of engineering, and showing the important connection between classroom and real world applications.”  This year’s program boasts nearly 500 teams from across the country, with 10 regional competitions and one national competition.

This is Clarkson’s second year of participation in the FIRST Robotics Competition. There are 20 Clarkson students, 25 Massena High School students, 15 Salmon River High School students, three high school teachers, two Clarkson professors, and two Clarkson staff on the Clarkson-Massena-Salmon River team.

The Northern STX is grateful to area businesses for supporting the team through donations of money, materials or services. Donors include: Alcoa, Candy Land, Carpenters & Joiners of America Local Union 278, Clopman’s Furniture and Appliance Store, Fishes IGA, Leroux Oil Company, Massena Building Supplies Inc., Massena Plumbing Supply Inc., the New York Power Authority, St. Lawrence Glass and Plastics, and Clarkson University’s SPEED Program (General Electric, Alcoa, Goodyear).
