When it comes to basketball, some play for fun, some play for money, and some play for both. Clarkson University students would fall into the third category, only the money they made wasn’t theirs to keep.
This year’s “Holiday Hoops Charity Basketball Tournament” had students lacing up the Nikes, Filas and Reeboks to hit the court for a good cause.
Sixteen teams participated in the tournament, organized by student volunteers from Clarkson’s Residence Life staff. The event raised $1,500 for the Potsdam Holiday Fund, an organization that provides toys, clothing, boots and food to needy families in the Potsdam area.
This year’s winning team goes by the inquisitive name “You Got Game???” and included team members Clint Hey ’00 (Interdisciplinary Engineering & Management, Penn Yan, N.Y.), Josh McAllister ’02 (Civil & Environmental Engineering, Hart’s Location, N.H.), Kyle Mattot, and Shane Blauvelt ’01 (Civil & Environmental Engineering, Clifton Park, N.Y.), this year’s tournament organizer.
“The tournament went great this year,” said Blauvelt. “Everything went smoothly and the participants had fun. It’s a great experience. There’s a personal satisfaction in knowing that you’re playing a part in raising funds for a worthy cause.”
Local sponsors who supported the Holiday Hoops tourney included Knight & Day Campus Store, the Clarkson Union Board (CUB), the Clarkson Residence Hall Association, Clarkson Residence Life, Great Northern Printing, the Integrator, the Clarkson New Dorms Council, the Clarkson Quad Dorm Council, Aramark, and the Clarkson University Student Association.
