Society Of Women Engineers At Clarkson University Named Best Student Section In Northeast
The Clarkson University student section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) was selected as the Best Student Section in Region F, which comprises 26 colleges and universities in the Northeastern United States. Section president Colleen E. O’Laughlin accepted the award at last June’s SWE national meeting in Phoenix, Ariz.
The award is based on SWE activities held throughout the year. A description of those events is submitted by the students to the national office each May. Events and programs included a Career Fair workshop, a graduate school panel, an annual dinner with area engineers, helping local Girl Scouts earn their Technical badges, and a new initiative, bringing hands-on engineering to middle school girls.
Celebrating its 50th anniversary in the year 2000, SWE’s mission is to stimulate women to achieve full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, expand the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life and demonstrate the value of diversity. From 50 members in 1950, SWE has grown to more than 15,000 worldwide. The Clarkson University student section celebrated its 25th anniversary last year.
