Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Garry Makes $20,000 Gift To Clarkson University Racing: Solar Knights, Formula Sae Teams Are Beneficiaries Of Contribution
POTSDAM, N.Y. – Mrs. Mary Elizabeth (Betsy) Garry has made a gift to Clarkson University Racing in the form of a $20,000 contribution.
Mrs. Garry, who lives in San Diego, has been a long time benefactor of the University. She and her husband Fred established an endowed scholarship fund in 1990 with contributions of over $100,000. The scholarship is awarded to outstanding students pursuing technical degrees at Clarkson. Fred Garry received the National Medal of Technology presented by George Bush in 1990.
I have always found the students at Clarkson to be the most intelligent and caring, said Mrs. Garry. "I am pleased to provide a little boost to both teams in order to get some additional momentum going!"
The Clarkson Solar Knights solar racing team will receive $15,000, while the Formula SAE team will receive $5,000.
Mrs. Garry has been a very generous supporter of the Clarkson Formula SAE team for several years, added Professor John Moosbrugger, Formula SAE adviser. "Her support has been crucial to the team's success. Her recent gift will go a long way toward ensuring another successful entry in the Formula SAE Competition and yet another outstanding learning experience for many Clarkson students."
Both squads consist of Clarkson students from all disciplines. The Solar Knights design, build and race a solar-powered vehicle in the Sunrayce competition sponsored by General Motors, Electronic Data Systems, and the U.S. Department of Energy.
The Formula SAE team designs, builds and races scaled-down models of Indy cars in an annual competition in Michigan sponsored by General Motors, Ford and Chrysler and the Society of Automotive Engineers. The team finished 23rd overall in this year's competition.
