Clarkson University's Odyssey Of The Mind Team Places Third In
The all-freshmen Clarkson University Odyssey of the Mind (OM) team placedthird at the international competition held at the University of Marylandin College Park from June 3-8.
OM is a competition in which teammates work together to accomplish aseries of tasks, including designing and building two individualbalsa-and-glue structures that can support as much weight as given.Although Clarkson had some problems with their structures, it was only asmall setback on an otherwise good day.
We're happy, said OM team member Matt Allen of Ogdensburg, N.Y. "Weare very happy with third."
The team had spent most of the semester preparing for OM, including aone-week stay on campus where all accomodations, food and eventualtransportation to the competition were paid for by the school.
Thesupport from the school was very essential, Allen said. "In fact, weprobably wouldn't have made it (to OM) without it."
Only two of the OM'ers-- Allen and Dallas Sutton, also of Ogdensburg--had previous experience with Odyssey. Also competing for Clarkson wereChris Copeland, Gainesville, N.Y.; Mike Harrington, Adams, N.Y.; ChadMcMillan, Champlain, N.Y.; and Rob Truslow of Valhalla, N.Y.
Collins is already looking forward to next year. "We're veryenthusiastic about sending teams in the future to similar kinds ofcompetitions," he said. "I've already talked with Matt and he's raring togo."
